Board management software

Free board management software for small nonprofits

Most board software is priced for organizations with a governance department. Board Manager is built for the executive director or volunteer who runs the board on their own: who is serving, when their terms end, what the next meeting needs, and who still has to sign this year's forms.

What's included

Roster and terms

Every member's term dates and officer positions, with alerts 180, 90, and 60 days before a term ends.

Committees and meetings

Committee rosters, meetings with sectioned agendas and attached files, RSVPs, attendance, and minutes.

Action items

Follow-ups from each meeting with an owner and due date, and a reminder the day before.

Recruitment

A candidate pipeline, a public recommendation form, and a skills matrix that shows what the board is missing.

Board member portal

Members open their meetings, documents, and tasks from an email link. No passwords.

Board Binder and documents

Bylaws, policies, and the standing reference every board member should have, in one place.

More on each: Term tracking · Recruitment pipeline · Onboarding checklists · Document signing

Is it the right fit?

A good fit if you have 0 to 2 staff, a board of roughly 5 to 30 people, and the problems are lapsed terms, unsigned forms, scattered documents, or recruiting in a rush.

Not the right fit if your board needs secure voting, signed minutes, annotated board books, or single sign-on. Those are board portal features, and we'd rather point you to a tool that does them well. Our roundup of 13 options and side-by-side comparisons say which.

Common questions

Is Board Manager really free?

Yes. The Starter plan is free with no time limit for boards of up to 25 members and candidates, with 500 emails and 25 text messages a month. No credit card is needed to start, and it is not a trial.

What does the $19 a month Engage plan add?

Unlimited members and candidates, annual conflict of interest and policy signing with a monthly reminder to anyone who hasn't signed, onboarding checklists that new members get automatically, and higher limits of 2,500 emails, 250 text messages, and 10 GB of files. It is one flat price, not per user.

Do board members need an account or a password?

No. Board members open their portal from an emailed link, or sign in at nonprofitboardmanager.com/my-board with just their email address. Someone who serves on more than one board can switch between them.

Can I bring our board over from a spreadsheet?

Yes. Members and candidates import from a CSV file, so a roster kept in Google Sheets or Excel comes across in one pass. Term dates and committees can be added as you go.

What doesn't it do?

It has no secure in-meeting voting, no signed minutes, no board book annotation, no built-in video, and no single sign-on. If your board relies on those, a full board portal such as BoardPro, Boardable, or OnBoard is the better fit.

Does it work with Claude?

Yes. Coordinators can connect Claude to their account to ask about the board, prepare an agenda, turn notes into minutes and action items, or draft a message. Sending messages stays in the app, and there are no delete tools.
